Description
The gate piers, railings, and gates to Arle Court were built around 1857 and designed by architect J.J. Rowland for Thomas Packer Walter Butt. There are three pairs of piers made of ashlar stone, featuring modillion capping. Two pairs have polished granite panels and ball-finials, while the inner pair is topped with ornate wrought-iron lamp-standards. The outer piers have quadrants. The wrought-iron gates and side gates include a lower panel with an intricate intertwining motif and bars that display three levels of scrolls, topped with enriched scroll crestings. The overthrow features additional scrolls. The railings on the low walls are similar to the gates and also have scroll crestings. All these elements at Arle Court create a cohesive and attractive group.
