Description
Arle Court Stables is a stable building constructed around 1857, designed by architect JJ Rowland for Thomas Packer Walter Butt. It is built from stone and features a stone slate roof, showcasing a Classical Flemish style. The building is L-shaped in plan and has one and a half storeys at the center, with a three-stage clock tower on the left and a two-storey gabled range on the right.
The main range includes a 'screen' with a central carriage arch that projects forward, topped by a central gable on a low parapet. This is flanked by the clock tower, which has enriched tracery panels at the clock stage and a hipped roof with a flag staff, and a gabled breakforward. The screen features two four-light mullion and transom windows, while the gabled range has a similar window on the ground floor and a two-light mullion window above. The gables are coped, and the clock was made by Smith of Derby. The interior has not been inspected. The rear of the gabled range connects to a wall and gateway leading from the southwest corner of Arle Court Stables to Hatherly Lane. All the listed items at Arle Court form a cohesive group.
