Description
The Granleys is a house, now a residential home, that was formerly the vicarage for the Church of St Mark. It was built around 1860 to 1870, likely designed by John Middleton for Reverend Griffiths. The building is constructed from coursed and hammer-dressed limestone with freestone dressings, featuring a steeply pitched plain tile roof with stone-coped gable ends. It has ashlar axial and gable end stacks with cornices.
The house has a double-depth plan with the main front rooms on either side of a central entrance hall, which leads to a central stairwell, while service rooms are located at the rear right. In a high Victorian Gothic style, the exterior is two storeys tall with an asymmetrical four-window gabled front. The left gable end features a canted bay window on the ground floor, a large gabled half dormer off-centre, and a gabled porch to the right of centre. The left-hand return has two similar half dormers and a projecting gable to the left, with a canted bay on the ground floor. All windows on this elevation have stone mullions and transoms, with the right-side windows featuring cusped lights.
Inside, the property includes original main stairs with stop-chamfered newels topped with brattished finials and arcaded balusters. The room to the left of the entrance hall has moulded ceiling beams supported by corbels and a chimneypiece with colonnettes. Historically, The Granleys was built for Reverend Griffiths, who served as vicar from 1860 to 1866 at the nearby Church of St Mark. The building forms a group with The Knowle.
