Description
This structure is a wall and gateway built around 1857, designed by architect J.J. Rowland for Thomas Walter Packer Butt. It features brick walls topped with stone copings and is flanked by ashlar piers. The gateway includes cast- and wrought-iron gates, an overthrow, and railings. The wall stands about 2 meters tall and is divided into two sections, measuring approximately 6 and 40 meters long. The outer piers are plain and include a plinth, cornice, and low blocking course, while the inner piers are decorated with panelling and obelisk finials. The inner gate piers also have obelisk finials. Between the outer and inner piers, there are spear-head railings on low walls. The double gates feature a lower enriched scroll panel above the bars, with a similar enriched scroll design on the overthrow. This wall and gateway, along with other listed items at Arle Court, create a cohesive and attractive group.
