Description

Charlton Park Hotel is a villa that has been converted into a hotel. It was built in the mid-19th century and has undergone various additions and alterations, particularly in the late 20th century. The building was remodeled in the late 19th century by architect John Middleton. It features a stucco exterior over brick with slate roofs.

The hotel has three storeys, with a garden facade that includes a basement. The central part of the building has four bays, with a pediment above the two central windows and two-storey, three-window bows on the outer bays. There are cornices above each floor and at the blocking course. A central solid portico supported by Doric columns and piers leads to a six-panel door with a plain transom light. The flanking wings are two-and-a-half storeys high, with gables designed as open pediments over arched windows, and one window below in each wing. Most windows are 1/1 sashes set in moulded architraves, while the bows have curved windows, some of which are casements. The left range features a tripartite window on the ground floor, and there is a verandah on the right side. The left wing has a later two-storey projection, while the right wing has a two-and-a-half storey projection and a three-bay extension.

The garden front presents a clearer symmetrical rhythm than the entrance front. Inside, the entrance hall showcases a colonnade of paired Doric columns and a black and white marble floor. The open-well staircase features fluted square columns. The ground-floor rooms primarily face the garden; the room to the right has an egg-and-dart cornice and a lobby with two Ionic columns. Panelled partition doors lead to the central room, which has Ionic columns in the bay, an acanthus modillion cornice, and a marble fireplace with a shell motif. The room on the left is oak panelled and includes a fireplace with a pulvinated frieze. Most doors are panelled with glazing and margin-lights in tooled architraves. The first floor has an egg-and-dart cornice and dado rail, with mainly six-panel doors.

Historically, John Middleton was known for designing several churches in Cheltenham and Charlton Kings.
