Description

Bafford Cottage is a house combining elements from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a later addition from the 1920s. The right-hand section dates to the early 17th century, the centre part was constructed around 1700 and remodelled subsequently, and the left-hand gabled bay was added in the 1920s. The construction is timber-frame, rendered and set on a stone plinth. It has a modern tile roof with a tall, tapering-off ridge end chimney on the right.

The right-hand part is one-and-a-half storeys and two bays, with a gable on the right side. An off-centre right entrance is framed by a 18th-century pedimented doorcase, with a 20th-century six-panel door. The ground floor has modern casement windows (one and three panes), traces of a dripmould, a canted bay, a small four-light window above the door, and a two-light casement in the gable. A plain two-light stone mullion window is found in the return. The centre section, two storeys high and rendered, has two windows and a porch to the left. It features a modern tile roof, an ashlar chimney with a moulded capping on the left part, and a further rendered stack at the left end. A range of windows and a chimney are visible in the 20th-century left-hand bay.

The interior of the oldest part contains one exposed wind brace and a roof truss with a cambered collar and a shaped elbow brace at the joint with the post. The centre part features a wide Tudor arch fireplace in a square rebate, a moulded cornice, a fine beam with a wide chamfer and ridge stop, and a stair recess with a light (now leading to a 1920s corridor) to the right.
