Description
Box Cottage is a house that dates from around 1700, with wings added in the mid to late 19th century. The building features a mix of materials: the left section is made of pinkish-brown brick, the center is constructed from reddish-brown brick in English bond, and the right section showcases red brick with yellow brick chequerwork in its headers. The left wing at the rear is built from coursed Cotswold stone rubble, and the roof of this wing is covered with stone tiles, while the rest of the roof has been renewed with tiles.
The house is two storeys high and has three first-floor windows, with a rear wing to the left. The entrance is located off-centre to the right and features a 20th-century porch with a glazed door. The windows throughout the building are also from the late 20th century. There are ridge and end stacks, with the right end stack having been renewed. The left wing projects from a two-storey gabled section that is slightly angled back from the main front and includes a two-light casement window in the gable.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is historically notable as the home of Cecil Day Lewis, who served as Poet Laureate from 1933 to 1938.
