Description
Bafford House is a villa that has been converted into a residential home for the elderly. It was built in 1826 and has undergone later additions and alterations. The front is made of Bath stone ashlar, resting on a sandstone basement, and features a concealed slate roof with end stacks that have cornices.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a basement on the right side. It has three bays, with the outer bays projecting forward. There are five first-floor windows arranged in a pattern of one, three, and one. The building has a plinth and full-height Ionic pilasters on the outer bays, while the centre bay features Tuscan pilasters. A flight of renewed steps leads to the central entrance porch, which is adorned with two pairs of Ionic columns, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The entrance includes a six-fielded-panel door with an overlight. The windows are mainly six-over-six sashes, with taller windows on the ground floor, all set within tooled architraves. The centre first-floor window is an eight-over-eight sash with a cornice supported by consoles. There are pilasters on the first bay of the right return, and blind openings.
Inside, the lobby features two niches and double panelled doors with an overlight that has glazing bars, all set in panelled reveals. The main hall showcases fluted Tuscan pilasters with embellished cornices. A sweeping staircase is supported by cast- and wrought-iron balusters and is illuminated by a round-arched staircase window and two niches. The six-panel doors have fielded-panel reveals, tooled architraves, and cornices. The lounge, which is now divided, retains a cornice and ceiling frieze decorated with honeysuckle and scroll motifs, along with moulded pelmets and shutters. Some false ceilings are reportedly in place to cover the original cornices.
