Description

Numbers 34 and 36 are a pair of semi-detached villas built between 1840 and 1841, constructed as part of the development of Prestbury Road in Cheltenham. They were built by Abraham Tyler, a local builder. The houses are stucco over brick, with a shallow hipped roof, stucco detailing, and party walls with rear stacks. They have a double-depth plan with inner side hallways and two-storey service ranges to the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high with a basement, featuring six windows on the first floor. The original windows are 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills. A paired central porch has Doric pillars on the ends and at the centre, supported by engaged pilasters. A flight of roll-edged steps leads to a four-panel door with raised and fielded upper panels and flush lower panels, accompanied by sidelights and an overlight with margin lights. The roof features a raised and coped detail with kneeler elements. The rear of the property retains an 8/8 sash window with margin lights alongside 6/6 sashes.

The interior was not inspected.

Subsidiary features include area railings to the left with an X-motif design and arrowhead-shaped forecourt railings and gates topped with urn finials.

The houses were developed for Joseph Pitt between 1835 and 1842, with the layout designed by architect John Forbes. They are shown on Merrett's Map of 1834 as part of the area’s layout. Numbers 32 to 66 (even numbers) form a group.
