Description

Numbers 58 and 60 are a pair of semi-detached villas built between 1838 and 1839 by the builder Abraham Tyler, who constructed many houses in the Pittville area of Cheltenham. The villas feature a stucco exterior over brick, a hipped slate roof, and stucco party-wall stacks. Number 60 has an iron verandah.

The buildings are two storeys high and have six first-floor windows, with an attached two-storey bay on the right. Architectural details include a continuous ground-floor sill band and a first-floor band supported by three Doric pilasters between the central windows. The original windows are 2/2 horizontal-pane, set in plain reveals with sills, while the bay on the right has 4/4 sash windows and the basement features 6/6 sashes. Each villa has end entrances with flights of steps leading to four-panel doors, which are flanked by sidelights and divided overlights. The eaves are wide.

The interior has not been inspected. Notable features include the verandah on the right, which has an x-and-circle motif on the uprights and an openwork frieze. Number 58 has window boxes with an X-motif. There is a wall approximately 2 meters high to the left, with a shared pier with Number 56, and dividing arrowhead railings.

These villas were built as part of the development of the area initiated by Joseph Pitt between 1835 and 1842, with the general layout designed by architect John Forbes. Numbers 34 to 60 on Prestbury Road form a group of semi-detached villas.
