Description

Numbers 23, 24, and 25 comprise a terrace of three houses, now used as offices and flats, dating from approximately 1810 to 1820. They are shown on the Post Office Map of 1820. The houses are constructed in brick with an ashlar facade, and have a slate roof, with brick end and party-wall stacks. They feature cast- and wrought-iron railings and balconies to numbers 24 and 25. The buildings have a double-depth plan with a service range to the rear.

The exterior presents three storeys with a basement, and nine windows to the first floor. Architectural details include floor bands, a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The windows are primarily 6/6 sashes, taller on the first floor, with 3/3 sashes on the second floor. Flights of roll-edged steps lead to the left-hand entrances. The doors are six-panel affairs with lattice friezes and fanlights featuring decorative glazing. Interior details are not known.

Subsidiary features include stick balusters to the railings alongside the steps of numbers 23 and 24. Balconies to the first floor of numbers 24 and 25 are ornamented with rods, central flowers, a fleur-de-lys motif, and inset scrolled panels. Blind boxes are present on the first-floor windows of number 24.

Cambray Place was designed as an avenue leading to Cambray House, which was formerly rented by the Duke of Wellington, though the house itself was demolished in the mid-20th century and replaced by a block of flats. Number 25 was additionally listed on May 5, 1972.
