Description

The boundary walls, gates, overthrow, and piers to the north and east of the Church of St Andrew in Cheltenham were built between 1885 and 1886 by Thomas Arnold. They are made of rough-faced stone with dressed stone copings and feature iron gates and an overthrow. There are three pairs of gate piers, each with chamfered plinths, shafts with chamfered angles, and cross-gabled cappings adorned with trefoils. One pair is located between a pedestrian gate that has a quatrefoil motif. A low stepped wall with chamfered coping extends for approximately 20 meters to another similar pair of piers and pedestrian gate. The wall continues, curving in a quarter circle for about 15 meters to double gates and another pair of piers, which have an ogeed overthrow. A further similar wall extends for approximately 18 meters. This structure is a significant feature of the streetscape and is an integral part of the setting of St Andrew's Church.
