Description

This is a terrace of six shops with flats above, located at 1 to 6 Montpellier Avenue in Cheltenham. Built between 1831 and 1832, the terrace features later alterations and was designed by RW and C Jearrad. The exterior is finished in stucco over brick and has a mansard slate roof, with brick and stucco party-wall stacks on the right side.

The building stands two storeys high with attics in the mansard roof. It has six first-floor windows, with two located at No. 1. The end window bays project slightly forward. The first floor features 3/6 and 6/6 sash windows set in plain reveals, with tooled architraves. The outer windows are adorned with cornices supported by consoles. The ground floor retains Corinthian pilasters topped with a continuous frieze and dentil cornice. The entrances consist of double, part-glazed doors with overlights. The shop fronts mainly include 2- and 3-light round-headed windows with slender pilasters in between, while the left side has panelled pilasters and rectangular lights. A balustrade with bulbous balusters crowns the terrace, although the left side is missing this feature. The attics contain 2/2 sash windows in the roof dormers.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, George Rowe noted in his 1845 Guide to Cheltenham, published in 1850, that the shops were occupied by various trades, including a tailor, a boots and shoes shop, a fishmonger and poulterer, and a general tea dealer and grocer. This terrace is part of the initial phase of the Montpellier shopping development and shares a similar design with the Montpellier Arcade.
