Description

A terrace of fourteen houses on Montpellier Spa Road, Cheltenham, built around 1823. The houses are constructed of ashlar over brick, with most now painted. They feature concealed roofs and iron balconies. The exterior is three storeys high with a basement, and has 41 first-floor windows: two to the left, then three sash windows to each house, with an entrance bay to the left. The ground floor has horizontal rustication, ground- and first-floor bands, a crowning frieze, cornice, and blocking course, and pilasters—several with sunk panels—to the ends and between every second house. The ground and first floors have mainly 6/6 sash windows, with 3/3 sashes to the second floor. Entrances are mainly on the right side, with steps leading to double four-panel doors. Numbers 12 to 26 have fanlights with decorative glazing, while the entrance to number 10, in the left-hand bay, has similar doors with an overlight. The rear of the houses retains many 6/6 sashes, some with margin lights, 8/8 sashes, and some 10/10 sashes. The interior was not inspected. A continuous first-floor balcony with a lattice motif extends from numbers 10 to 26; numbers 28 to 36 have continuous balconies featuring a Carron Company heart-and-anthemion motif.
