Description

Holy Apostles Old School is a school building constructed between 1872 and 1873, with some additions and alterations made in the mid-20th century, including an entrance range on the east side. Designed by architect John Middleton, it showcases Gothic Revival architecture in the Early Decorated style. The building is made of rough-faced coursed limestone with grey and green stone dressings and features a double-pitch tiled roof.

The exterior consists of a single tall storey with four bays and an apse, supported by offset buttresses. The entrance is located in the 20th-century range at the east end, above which are three-light windows adorned with Geometric-type tracery in pointed-arched, hollow-moulded surrounds, featuring alternately coloured voussoirs. The gables are topped with stone copings. The sides of the building have four straight-headed windows with three cusped lights, each having hollow-moulded mullions in double-chamfered surrounds. The apse contains two-light windows with similar Geometric-type tracery and pointed surrounds, also with alternately coloured voussoirs, and features a blocked doorway. There are two roof dormers on each side with three-light casements, positioned between cusped triangular vents. A bell turret is located on the west side, and a cylindrical chimney is found on the east. The roof is decorated with ridge tiles.

Inside, the school boasts rich polychroming on the timber work, with four braced collar trusses in each aisle and a complex roof structure in the apse, along with a panelled frieze below the wall plate.

Historically, this building was constructed to complement Middleton's Church of the Holy Apostles, and it is part of a group that includes the drinking fountain on London Road. John Middleton also designed several churches in Cheltenham, including the Church of All Saints, Church of St Mark, Church of St Philip and St James, and Church of St Stephen.
