Description

Two sets of double gates with gate piers and railings fronting Burlington House were constructed around 1826 to 1832. The gates and railings are made of cast iron, while the piers are finished in stucco and ashlar. The spearhead railings rise up to the piers, extending approximately 1 meter to the left and 22 meters between the sets of gate piers, and feature anthemion finials. The piers have square shafts with plinths and plain cornices, topped with peaked caps. The gates include arrowhead bars and dogbars, a lower band of scroll decoration, and a central band with a circle motif, along with anthemion and urn finials. This impressive set of railings, gates, and gate piers enhances the carriage sweep fronting Lypiatt Road and contributes significantly to the streetscape.
