Description
The Cheltenham Gas Company Building and adjoining walls date to 1880, with later alterations including conversions to offices around 1995. Constructed of red brick with terracotta tile and black brick bands, it features ashlar dressings to the windows and copings, and a slate roof with external end and ridge stacks topped with cornices and decorative ridge tiles. The asymmetrical design is largely in the Gothic Revival style, forming an L-shaped layout.
The exterior features gables over each window and a chamfered plinth. A central breakforward is present on the right end. The ground floor incorporates three 2-light mullion windows with casements, along with chamfered sills, lintels, and jambs. A moulded band is followed by a band of ornamental tiles and a continuous chamfered sill band. The outer windows are arched, while the central window is a 3-light mullion and transom design with an arched hood and flower stops. Finials adorn the gables, and the roof is hipped on the right with a tall external stack. The entrance, situated off-centre to the right, has a 6-panel door and overlight, protected by a chamfered lintel. Adjacent gates lead to the main range, which is divided into a single-storey, three-bay section and a two-storey, eight-window section. The single-storey range has two 2-light mullion and transom windows with a 4-centre-arched overlight, plus a blocked entrance within a projecting gabled porch. The two-storey section features gabled breakforwards on the second and fifth windows at the first floor, and a full-height gabled breakforward to the seventh window. Stepped brickwork and chamfered copings with finials characterize the gables. Internally, original joinery and plasterwork remain, including 6-panel doors, a dogleg staircase with turned balusters, and a tile floor in the hall.
A wall to the left contains round-arched arcades on pilasters, while the wall to the right return has pilaster buttresses. The right return features a two-story section with a central, four-stage clock tower, complemented by three first-floor windows. The ground floor includes 3-light windows with mullions, transoms, and 4-centre-arched overlights, while the first floor showcases breakforwards, with similar 2-light windows. A modillion cornice tops the clock tower, which is surmounted by a truncated peaked roof with lucarnes and iron cresting. The terracotta decorative modillion band beneath the first floor windows displays the inscription "CHELTENHAM GAS COMPANY".
