Description

Redgrove Cottages, consisting of Nos. 3 and 4, are two semi-detached estate cottages with an attached wall and outbuildings located on Hatherley Lane in Cheltenham. They were built between 1836 and 1875 for Thomas Packer Walter Butt, likely designed by JJ Rowland. The cottages feature red and pinkish-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, creating an irregular chequerboard effect, with ashlar dressings and a banded red and grey tiled roof, all in the Tudor Vernacular style.

The exterior is two storeys high, with two first-floor windows and two narrow single-bay entrances at each end of the main range. Each floor has two windows, which are fitted with lattice casements that have sills and hoodmoulds. The first-floor windows are topped with gables. The entrances consist of plank doors with strap hinges, set beneath hoodmoulds, and above them are stepped blind panels. The returns of the cottages feature a window on each floor, also with lattice casements and a quatrefoil design in the gable. Decorative barge-boards adorn the structure, and there is a central stepped ridge stack.

The interior has not been inspected. The attached wall at the rear extends approximately 10 meters high and leads to a pair of single-storey outhouses that have central openings and plank doors. The returns of the outhouses also have lattice casements and an oculus in the gable, along with decorative barge-boards. These cottages are part of a notable group of estate cottages built for the Arle Court estate around 1857 to 1860.
