Description
Numbers 6 and 7 are a pair of semi-detached houses with adjoining walls, built around 1824 to 1828, likely designed by John Forbes. The houses are constructed of ashlar over brick, with some areas stuccoed on the right side, and feature slate roofs and tall rebuilt brick party-wall stacks. They have a double-depth plan with outer stairwells.
The exterior consists of two storeys with basements and attics, featuring four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 pattern. The entrance bays are set back on the sides and have lower walls adjoining. Notable ashlar detailing includes a first-floor band, a crowning frieze and cornice with a blocking course, and copings on the right side. The entrance bays and side walls are adorned with moulded cornices. The ground and first floors have 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals, with the ground-floor windows set in wider elliptically-arched recesses. The basements contain 3/6 sash windows where original, along with a 20th-century door.
The entrances feature roll-edged steps leading to four raised-and-fielded-panel doors with overlights and margin-lights. The first-floor band continues over the doors, and there is a low parapet with copings. The attic has dormer windows with casements, and additional attic casements are located in the returns of the flattened gable ends, which also have copings.
The interior has not been inspected. There are subsidiary features, including coped walls on either side of the houses, approximately 2 meters high and 1.5 meters long. Historically, the street was originally known as Montpellier Retreat, and John Forbes served as the architect and surveyor for the Pittville Estate from 1835 to 1836. The walls of these houses abut No. 5 on the left and No. 8 on the right.
