Description

A terrace of 32 houses, now shops and houses, built around 1810 to 1820, with later additions and alterations including shop fronts from the late 19th century and 20th century. The construction is stucco over brick, with slate roofs, brick and stucco party wall stacks, and wrought-iron balconies. The majority of the houses are two storeys with two windows to the first floor, although the house to the left has three first-floor windows. The south return, facing High Street, is three storeys with attic windows in a mansard roof on the left side. Service ranges and workshops are located to the rear. Original windows are 6/6 and 8/8 sashes, with some blind windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. The second floor of the south return features 3/6 and 6/6 sashes. Original six-panel doors with fanlights (some with decorative glazing bars) are found at the entrances. The building incorporates a curved plan angle, followed by two set-backs. 19th-century shop fronts are visible at numbers 16, 18, and 19, featuring two-light windows with turned mullions, entablatures, and brackets to the cornices. A low parapet with copings tops the building. The interior retains original joinery and plasterwork, including some dogleg staircases with stick balusters and wreathed handrails. Wall-paintings of approximately 1835 were noted at number 12, in the ground-floor front room, depicting landscapes of high quality. One painting, covering a fireplace, represents a monastic ruin, possibly Kirkstall Abbey near Leeds. First-floor balconies at numbers 4 and 12 have individual balconies with rods embellished with lead stars. This is a well-preserved example of artisan housing in the center of Cheltenham. The terrace includes numbers 271 to 277 of High Street.
