Description

The Former Wesley Chapel in Cheltenham was built in 1839 and underwent some alterations in the 1960s. It was one of 100 chapels constructed to celebrate the Centenary of Methodism. The front facade features ashlar stone over brick, with stucco on the right side and pinkish-red brick on the left. The building has a hipped slate roof and is two storeys high with a basement, arranged in a 1-3-1 bay configuration. The central bay projects forward and includes round-arched upper windows, while the end bays have blind round-arched openings. A first-floor band and a band below the cornice display an inscription. The entrance, added in the 1960s, has board doors and a flat canopy. The upper stage features three windows in the central bay, with 18/24 sash windows that have radial glazing at the tops. The left return has five upper-stage windows, and there is a first-floor plat band. The round-arched windows on the ground floor have 18/18 sashes, while those on the first floor have 18/24 sashes, all with radial glazing. Blocked basement openings have flat arches made of rubbed brick, and the right return has similar window features. Some windows include coloured glass.

Inside, the chapel is said to retain a gallery on three sides supported by iron columns. The ceiling is flat with a moulded cornice, and there is a barrel vault above the organ loft. The interior also features late 19th-century pews. Historically, the chapel cost between £4,500 and £4,850 to build and originally included a portico.
