Description

The stables west of Bradstone Manor are likely from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with some parts rebuilt around the mid-18th century. They are constructed of stone rubble, featuring dressed stone in the east projection, and have a rag slate roof with hipped ends. The building is two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical west front.

On the ground floor, there is a rectangular opening with a concrete lintel, which is partly glazed. There is a central opening beneath a rendered lintel and a small square opening to the right under a timber lintel. Above these, there are openings aligned with those on the ground floor to the left and centre. The left-hand hipped end has been partly rebuilt with concrete block, while the outer wall is made of stone rubble. The right-hand hipped end features an entrance beneath a sloping rag slate roof supported by curved timber brackets.

The stables are flanked by castellated walls of a gatehouse on the right-hand side. At the rear of the junction on the east, the angle of the wall changes, leading to a shallow oblique projecting wing, all made of dressed stone. This area likely represents remnants of courtyard buildings associated with the gatehouse and manor. The southeast canted wall has a moulded plinth and a rectangular chamfered granite opening, similar to those found on the gatehouse. The east elevation continues to the right with stone rubble masonry that includes doveholes.

Inside, there are heavy ceiling beams above the ground floor. Additionally, there are remains of a sundial located directly in front of the house, which may have originally been part of the stables.
