Description

Maitland Cottage is a house with a core dating to the late 16th century, significantly altered in the early 18th century. The walls are a mix of whitewashed cob and stone, topped by an asbestos slate roof; it was previously thatched. There are two external chimney stacks, one lateral with set-offs. Originally, the house comprised a single-cell plan at the north end, containing a crosswing heated by a lateral stack and gabled to the front. This crosswing forms a wing to the east. The main range, likely an addition or rebuilding, is heated from a gable end stack. A 20th-century addition exists at the rear of the main range. The front facade has a 2:1 window arrangement. Inside the 16th-century wing is a large fireplace with a replaced lintel and a cross beam with a deep chamfer and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A staircase features Chinese Chippendale design balusters.
