Description
Clome Cottage is a cottage dating back to the 17th century, along with a single bay of a formerly attached 18th-century barn, now used as living space, and a later early 19th-century outshot attached to the western elevation. The cottage is constructed of plastered stone walls with cob above, and has a thatched roof supported on replacement timbers. An external stone chimney stack with brick above is present in the southern gable.
The cottage is gable-ended, the outshot has a single west-facing roof pitch, and the west roof has been altered. The cottage stands two storeys high, and the outshot is single-storey. The front elevation, facing east, features a pair of windows with metal frames on each floor, separated by a 20th-century planked door with a gabled thatched hood positioned slightly to the north of centre. The outshot features a single south-facing timber casement window and a thatched roof.
The ground floor of the cottage contains a single room with a small entrance lobby. A stone fireplace with a timber bressumer and clome oven is built into the southern wall; the left side of the fireplace has been modified with the addition of a new wall. A blocked window is at the north end, and in places the original stone walling has been stone clad. Unfinished ceiling beams and wide floorboards extend throughout the room, with particularly wide beams at the north end. A modern timber staircase gives access to the first floor, which is partitioned by modern wooden narrow plank stud walling. Historic features include a small 19th-century fireplace, the lower length of a truss, and the feet of some straight principles. An opening in the north-west corner leads into further living space created within the former end bay of the 18th-century barn.
Clome Cottage, located on Queen Street to the west of Northlew’s historic village square, is thought to date from the 17th century. The cottage, attached barn, and outshot are depicted on the 1843 Tithe Apportionment Map. The building is designated at Grade II for its architectural interest, as a good example of vernacular architecture reflecting local materials and building techniques. It retains much of its original 17th-century fabric, including its fireplace with clome oven, and its plan shows the growth and development of the building. The cottage also holds historical interest as one of the earliest surviving buildings in the village, and contributes to the historic character of the village, having group value with other listed buildings nearby.
