Description

The outbuilding attached to the south-west front of Colcharton Farmhouse is likely an original open shed or small barn that has been converted into a store. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and is constructed of rubble, with the wall facing the house painted, and a concrete tile roof. The building is long, with the main entrance on the lower side facing north-west, and features various lean-to additions. On this side, there is one wide opening with a steel joist lintel, two early lean-tos with slate roofs, and a later addition made of concrete blocks.

Towards Colcharton, there is a half-hipped section that is part of the former farmhouse, which has two floors and includes a plank door flanked by a six-pane light at the top of a flight of eleven stone steps, along with another door below. The main wall facing south-east has a former wide opening that is now blocked, as well as a series of former ventilation slots with grilles. The outer end features a rendered gable with a two-light casement window.

Inside, the building has a series of simple pegged collar trusses arranged in nine bays. At the house end, it connects to the main house via a section of rubble wall that includes a wide opening, and there is a small cobbled courtyard enclosed by this structure. The first section of the building, up to a straight joint in the masonry, belongs to Colcharton, while the remainder is associated with the adjacent farm. This building is particularly significant for its group value with the farmhouse, as it helps enclose the garden.
