Description
The north portal to the Tavistock Canal tunnel, dated 1803, is located at NGR 460 723. The Tavistock Canal was constructed between 1803 and 1817 by John Taylor and spans 4½ miles, connecting the River Tavy to the River Tamar. Nearly 2 miles of the canal runs through a tunnel beneath Morwell Down. The north portal features a lock on one side to manage water flow.
The portal is carved into the rock face and has a round arch made of voussoirs and a keystone, with a large datestone positioned above. The rubble walling rises approximately 3 meters above the archway and is topped with coping. The south portal at Morwellham is designed in a similar style.
