Description
Derriton Viaduct is a railway viaduct that carries the Holsworthy to Bude railway, built in 1898. It features shuttered concrete construction designed to resemble 'V' jointed masonry. The structure consists of nine semicircular arches, with granite projections from the arches' springers that were used to support timber scaffolding during construction. The four central piers are slightly splayed out and rest on chamfered plinths. Corbelled panels are located above the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth spandrels on the south front, as well as the first, third, fifth, and seventh panels on the north front. The eastern panels on both sides, closest to the town, display the date 1898. The parapet has chamfered coping stones. The viaduct spans over the mill leat.
The branch line it served opened on 10 September 1898 and closed on 3 October 1966. This structure is noted for being an early example of shuttered concrete construction for bridges, convincingly simulating masonry.
