Description

Hartleigh Barton is a farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century, with a possible 18th-century addition. It features rendered stone and cob walls and a gable-end slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan, where the rear wing appears to be older, although the front range may also date from the same period or be from the 18th century. The rear wing contains one main heated room, while the front range has two heated rooms with a central hall. There is a small wing at the right-hand end, which may have been added as a dairy or to provide a staircase.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front range. The first floor has early 19th-century sashes with 12:9:12 panes, while the ground floor features 16-pane sashes. A central gabled early 19th-century porch leads to a six-panel door. The wing at the left-hand end has an irregular two-window elevation with early 20th-century small-paned casements above and mid-20th-century three-light casements below. To the right, there is a 19th-century hipped roof porch with a plank door.

Inside, the front range includes a fielded panel door and an 18th-century arched head wall cupboard. The left-hand fireplace has a chamfered wooden lintel. The rear wing contains a late 17th-century or early 18th-century wall cupboard with cock's head hinges, fielded panels, and a dentilled cornice. The Risdon family, noted for their historian of Devon, owned Hartleigh Barton for nearly 300 years until around 1860.
