Description

A terrace of five cottages, dating to around 1827. The cottages are constructed of solid rendered walls with slate roofs. Chimneys are present on the party and end walls, with those at either end of number 46 rebuilt in red brick. The terrace is arranged in two groups: numbers 43-45 are at a lower level, following the slope of the ground, and are of a two-window range, with a doorway replacing the right-hand ground-floor window. Numbers 46-47 are of a three-window range, with a doorway replacing the central ground-floor window; number 47 has a recessed one-window projection to the right. Each cottage has a four-panelled door, number 46 featuring a knocker. The door panels are flush at numbers 44-46, moulded at numbers 43 and 47, and are set within beaded wood door surrounds with cornice hoods on shaped brackets, except at number 44. The windows are barred sashes in recessed box frames, with eight panes per sash at numbers 44-46 and margin panes at numbers 43 and 47. A blind second-storey window is located to the right of numbers 43-45 and in the middle of number 47. Number 46 now has a blank space in the middle of the second storey. The front gardens have retaining walls, rendered at numbers 43-45 and of exposed stone rubble at numbers 46-47. Iron railings run along the front, with alternate uprights forming loops at numbers 43-45. Numbers 46-47 have both uprights and standards with patterned finials. A row of matching finials is above the side gate at number 47. The garden on which numbers 46-47 now stand was sold in 1827 to John Illman of Bideford, a mason, and a 1860 deed indicates that Illman (died 1853) had built two houses on the site.
