Description

Britton's Farmhouse and attached shippon is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The building features colourwashed render over stone and cob, topped with a late 19th-century gabled slate roof. There is a lateral stack at the center of the front wall made of rendered stone, finished in 19th and 20th-century brick, and a left end stack of rendered stone finished in mid-19th-century brick. The farmhouse has a three-unit plan with a through-passage to the right of the central hall and an early 19th-century rear wing. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window range.

A late 19th-century stone porch with brick dressings leads to a moulded semi-circular arched doorway, which contains a late 19th-century six-panelled inner door, two of the panels being glazed. There are flat rendered arches above a late 19th-century plank loft door to the shippon on the right, and late 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, along with a one-light casement to the left of the door. A doorway to the shippon is located in the right gable end. The early 19th-century rear wing has a rendered stone end stack. Inside, there is a stop-chamfered beam in the hall. The first floor has not been inspected, but external evidence and information from the occupant suggest that the roof trusses have been replaced.
