5/42 Cottage adjoining Rose Cottage - at the east

Cottage. Core probably C18. Whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, thatched roof gabled at right end, stack at left end, projecting stack at right end. One of a pair of cottages said formerly to have been 3 properties. The original plan may have been a single-cell cottage at the right end, the left-hand end may have been one half of a 2-cell cottage. 2-room single depth plan with a central entrance in front of the stair and a rear lean-to for service rooms. Living room/kitchen at the right, parlour to the left. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 2-window front with a central porch of a sloping slate canopy carried on stone cheeks. Circa late C19 2-light casement windows with glazing bars. Interior Exposed joists of slender scantling, the right-hand room has an open fireplace with stone rubble jambs, a plain timber lintel and a cloam oven. C19 chimney piece to the left-hand fireplace. A blocked doorway in the left-hand room formerly led into the adjacent property. Rose Cottage (qv). One of a group of thatched cottages at Gridley Corner.
