Description

This cottage, located at the east of Rose Cottage, likely dates back to the 18th century. It features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and has a thatched roof with a gable at the right end and a stack at the left end, along with a projecting stack at the right end. It is one of a pair of cottages that were said to have originally been three separate properties. The original layout may have included a single-cell cottage at the right end, while the left-hand end could have been one half of a two-cell cottage. The building has a two-room single depth plan with a central entrance in front of the stair and a rear lean-to for service rooms. The living room and kitchen are on the right, while the parlour is on the left. The cottage is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window front with a central porch featuring a sloping slate canopy supported by stone cheeks. The windows are late 19th century two-light casements with glazing bars. Inside, there are exposed joists of slender scantling, and the right-hand room includes an open fireplace with stone rubble jambs, a plain timber lintel, and a cloam oven. The left-hand fireplace has a 19th-century chimney piece. There is a blocked doorway in the left-hand room that once led to the adjacent property, Rose Cottage. This cottage is part of a group of thatched cottages at Gridley Corner.
