Description

Annery Kiln Cottages, Nos. 1-5, form a cottage row dating from the early 19th century. The cottages are built of colourwashed render over coursed slatestone rubble, with a hipped slate roof and brick ridge and end stacks. Each cottage has a single-unit plan with a rear service outshut. They rise three storeys, presenting an eight-window range. A flat rendered archway is above a 19th-century plank door to the left, with three 20th-century doors following. Most windows are sixteen-pane sashes, with the exception of two 20th-century windows in the centre of the front elevation. The second floor incorporates a twelve-pane sash to the left and two-light casements with glazing bars on the right. The left side wall has three sixteen-pane sashes, with horns on the ground floor. The rear outshut includes a 19th-century plank door to the left, 20th-century doors, and 19th-century two-to-three-light casements with glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected. The cottages were likely built to house workers at Lord Rolle's Annery Kiln and other associated kilns along the Torridge. They are listed for their group value. A minor amendment was made to this listing on 2 February 2017.
