Description
Swallowfield is a house that underwent early 19th century remodelling of an older structure. It is constructed with a rendered finish over cob and stone and features a hipped thatch roof with brick stacks at the internal and end walls. The building is arranged in a U-shape, with rear wings that flank a small service courtyard. It stands two storeys tall and has a three-window range in the main central section, which is flanked by plain bays. The main range includes flat rendered arches above 2-light casement windows with glazing bars. The left bay, which extends into the rear left wing, has a 20th-century door and a veranda made from salvaged timbers from the training ship HMS Revenge. The right bay has a flat roof, and the main entry is located at the rear.
Inside, there are early 19th-century panelled doors, a dog-leg staircase with stick and turned balusters, and early 19th-century fireplaces on the right. Historical records from 1764 describe the house as having a three-unit plan with a central hall, much of which has not survived. The wall thickness indicates that the original house remains at the centre, with the addition of the flanking early 19th-century wings that create the U-plan layout.
