Description
April Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It features whitewashed rendered cob on stone footings and has a thatched roof that is hipped at the right end. The house has two rear lateral stacks and a single depth main block that is two rooms wide, with a central passage. There is a rear addition from the 1960s. The exact relationship between April Cottage and the adjacent Brookfield is unclear; they seem to be part of the same build and may have originally been one house. The river Kenn flows next to the right end of the house.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front and a front door located to the left of centre, leading into the passage. The windows are modern plate glass set in timber frames. Inside, the cottage has been modernized, but timber panelling is said to remain behind modern wall plaster on the party wall with Brookfield, according to the owner. The roof has straight principal rafters that are visible on the first floor, although the apex was not inspected during the survey in 1987.
