Description
Brookfield is a house, likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed with whitewashed rendered cob walls on stone rubble footings, and has a thatched roof with a gable at the left end. There are two external stacks: a projecting one at the front and another at the left end. The house was possibly built alongside April Cottage, which is adjacent to the right. The right-hand room appears to be a 17th-century hall or parlour.
The house has a symmetrical front with three bays, incorporating a thatched porch in the centre and early 19th-century 20-pane sash windows. Inside, the right-hand room features an open fireplace with a large, slightly curved lintel of red sandstone, in two pieces, along with a chamfered axial beam and exposed ceiling joists. The left-hand room has a 20th-century fireplace, potentially concealing earlier features, and exposed, closely-spaced ceiling beams, most of which have been replaced. The roof was not inspected, but it may be of historical significance and could influence the building’s dating.
