Description

Lantern Cottage is probably of late 17th century origin, with possible 18th century additions. It comprises two adjoining cottages, now combined into a single house, situated on a prominent corner site in Kennford. The exterior is whitewashed cob on stone rubble footings, with a thatched roof and gabled ends. There are projecting stacks, one facing north, the other west. The plan is L-shaped. The west-facing block appears to have originally contained a heated room and a service room. The north-facing block may have been a single-room cottage, originally with a newel stair near the stack. The north elevation has an asymmetrical two-window façade (facing north), with a plank front door to the right and two 2-light timber windows with glazing bars. A projecting stack on the west-facing block has drip ledges. The west elevation has two ground floor and one first floor casement windows with glazing bars. The west-facing block’s interior includes a rough chamfered crossbeam and an open fireplace with a chamfered scroll-stopped timber lintel. A second fireplace has a low, plain timber lintel and may be a rebuild. The roof has straight principal rafters.
