Description

Wren Cottage is a former lodge to Haccombe House, likely built in the early 19th century, around the same time as the house's rebuilding. The cottage is whitewashed and rendered, featuring a deep thatched roof that extends over a verandah on three sides, with an axial stack that has a rendered shaft. It is designed in the cottage ornee style and has a two-room layout, with the main room at the front and a service room at the rear. This lodge is one of two that served the house, with the other having burned down before 1955.

The cottage is single-storey with an attic and has a symmetrical front with one window. It boasts a four-bay rustic verandah supported by renewed posts, featuring a short eaves canopy made of split logs, which continues for five bays on each side. There is a canted bay window at the front, along with 19th-century casement windows that have ornamental leaded panes, and similar casement windows on each side. The rear bays of the verandah on the sides have been enclosed, creating a porch on the left side. The thatched roof includes attic dormers, with three on the right side, two on the left, and one in the center, all fitted with 19th-century casement windows with ornamental leaded panes. The interior has not been inspected. Wren Cottage is an attractive thatched lodge situated in an isolated position.
