Description

A terrace of four houses with shops, built in the mid-19th century in Teignmouth. The houses are constructed of painted stucco with a slate roof and rendered stacks built into the party walls between them. Each house has double-depth plans.

The exterior features three storeys; the shop fronts are two-window ranges, with the end houses having forward-facing gables. The upper-floor windows are mostly 6/6-pane sashes, with moulded architraves to most of the windows. The architrave to the window of No.41 has been removed, but cast-iron balconettes remain. No.42 has a moulded cornice to the fascia of its double-fronted shop. It also has moulded sills on low plinths and margin panes to the set-back double doors with an overlight. To the left is a six-panel door with an overlight. No.43 is similar, with a door to the right. No.44 is gabled, and the shop windows have curved upper corners with spiral-moulded, likely cast-iron colonnettes, moulded caps, and plinths to the canted windows which flank the half-glazed door. The upper floors have 20th-century replacement windows.

The interiors were not inspected. The terrace is generally well-preserved, and features some good Victorian shop fronts.
