Description
Abbotsford is a house, formerly a farmhouse, that underwent remodeling in the late 18th century to early 19th century, likely based on a structure from the 17th century. It features rendered rubble walls and a hipped slate roof on the main block, while the left rear wing has a hipped roof and the right rear wing is gabled. There are two rear lateral stacks and one stack at the right gable end, all made of rendered rubble with brick shafts. The original layout was probably a three-room plan with a through passage, where the lower room and hall were heated by the rear lateral stacks, and the inner room by the gable end stack. The rear wings were likely added in the 18th and 19th centuries. The house was re-fronted in the late 18th century and has a probable 19th-century barn wing at the left end. It is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front, featuring a symmetrical two-window arrangement with a central door to the left and an additional two-window bay to the right. The windows are late 18th century to early 19th century, 12-pane hornless sash windows that are almost flush with the wall. The door is contemporary, with four fielded panels, and the lower half has been repaired. The doorcase includes pilasters, entablature blocks, a frieze with a moulded cornice, and a rectangular fanlight. There is a modillion cornice below the eaves. In front of the house, there is a low garden wall made of limestone rubble, with square gate piers and a 19th-century wrought iron gate positioned to the left of center. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but may contain high-quality late 18th-century joinery.
