Description
A pair of cottages, originally probably three, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. They have been considerably altered in the 20th century. The cottages are constructed of sandstone and limestone rubble with a hipped thatched roof. There are two large projecting rubble stacks at the rear and a brick stack at the left-hand gable end. The original layout is obscured by later changes, but they were likely initially a row of cottages, possibly farm cottages for Court Farm. Each was probably originally a two-room plan with one principal heated room. Number 2 is currently made up of two cottages that have been converted into one dwelling.
The cottages have two storeys and an asymmetrical three-window front. The windows are circa mid-18th century, 3-light metal frame casements with diamond “leaded” panes. There are three rustic thatched porches; the left-hand porch to Number 1 has a 19th-century 6-panel door with the top two lights glazed. The porch to the right of centre has had its door removed and replaced with a sheet of plate glass. The right-hand porch for Number 2 has a 20th-century plank door.
The interior of Number 2 has been extensively altered and has no visible original features. Number 1 also appears to lack original features internally. Despite the internal alterations, the cottages retain a relatively traditional appearance externally and contribute to an attractive group in the village centre alongside the church house and Court Farm Inn.
