Description

This pair of disused limekilns, located about 300 metres south-west of Chercombe Bridge, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. They are heavily overgrown with trees and creeper and situated on the east side of the road from Chercombe Bridge. Constructed from stone with brick detailing, the kilns are cylindrical in shape. The larger kiln, located to the north, features openings on both the north and south sides, while the smaller kiln to the south has a single opening on the west. The openings of the northern kiln are shaped like inverted U's with splayed feet, and the apexes of the arches are made of brick. Inside these openings, the chambers have corbelled stone vaults, and the small apertures leading into the central pit have segmental brick arches. Notably, the northern opening has a small square recess in its west wall, positioned about one metre from the ground. The southern kiln has an opening with a segmental brick arch, and there is a large hole in the rear wall of its chamber that leads into the pit.
