Description
Torre Cottage is likely a late 16th or 17th century house, probably a former farmhouse, with a 20th century addition on the north-east. The original structure was of rendered stone or cob construction, and originally had a thatched roof, half-hipped at the left-hand end. A brick stack rises from the roof off-centre to the right, and a projecting stone stack with a tapered top is in the left-hand gable, with later brick shafts above and to one side. The building originally had a 2- or 3-room and through-passage plan, but only the lower end and part of the hall remain.
The cottage has two storeys, with a single-storey lean-to, probably of cob, at the rear. It has four windows, all with 20th century wood casements that have the appearance of 19th century designs. A doorway in the second bay from the right leads into the through passage. A large room to the left, likely the original kitchen, has chamfered ceiling beams, one of which has a stop-chamfered spine beam with run-out stops. A fireplace with a segmental brick arch and a stone oven with a plain rectangular opening is present. A projecting stair turret is located at the rear. To the right is a small room, probably the remains of the former hall, with a stack backing onto the through-passage. The roof trusses, which have not been inspected, have plain feet to the principal rafters and are reported by the owner to be unblackened. Further interior features may be concealed beneath plaster.
