Description

A pair of cottages, likely originating as part of a larger farmhouse, probably dating from the late 16th or 17th century, or possibly even earlier, with later additions in the 19th century. The cottages are constructed of rendered stone or cob, and have a corrugated iron roof, which is believed to cover an earlier thatched roof. They are two storeys high, with the upper storey having been raised slightly. The front elevation has a four-window arrangement. Each cottage has a central doorway with a single-storey 19th-century lean-to porch. There are windows on either side of the ground floor, with matching windows above. All windows are 19th-century wooden casements. A panel of slate-hanging is located between the left-hand ground and second-storey windows of the left-hand cottage. A projecting stone chimney stack with set-offs and a tapered top, with an added shaft above, is visible in the left-hand gable. Another projecting stack with set-offs and a tapered top is located on the rear wall at the extreme right-hand end. The interiors were not inspected, but reportedly contain interesting features, possibly obscured by plaster. The cottages have group value due to their age and potential historical significance.
