Description
Wedgwood Cottage is likely a former farmhouse, dating probably to the late medieval period, with alterations in the late 16th or 17th century and 20th-century additions at the rear. The construction is of rendered stone or cob, and it has a steeply pitched thatched roof, half-hipped to the left and fully hipped to the right. The original plan included a cross-passage and a large room to the left (probably the hall), with a lower room to the right that has since been demolished. The building is two storeys high, although the upper storey is likely a later addition.
A prominent feature of the front is a large, projecting chimney-stack with set-off weathering courses and a tapered top, with an added shaft above. To the right of the stack is a doorway with a chamfered round-headed door frame and a 20th-century single-storeyed porch. There are two ground-floor windows of differing heights to the left of the stack, and one window on either side of the stack on the second storey. All windows are C19 wood casements, with the second-storey windows featuring small oblong panes.
Inside, the interior details have been altered, but a stud-and-panel partition to the left of the passage retains one chamfered stud. The ground-floor room features a chamfered ceiling beam and a chamfered lintel with step-stops. The roof has blackened timbers, including two trusses with threaded purlins and a ridge; the south-eastern truss retains its cambered collar-beam. A hip rafter, many common rafters, and some thatching spars remain. Both trusses show notches indicating former inserted partitions. The cottage presents a dramatic appearance externally and serves as the focal point of the village street.
