Description

A pair of cottages, likely originally a farmhouse, dating from the late 16th or 17th century. The cottages are constructed of rendered stone or cob. Manor Cottage has a thatched roof, while Orchard Cottage has a tiled roof. Orchard Cottage has been heightened. Manor Cottage has an irregular window arrangement, mostly consisting of 20th-century imitation wood casements. A left-hand ground-floor window has been altered in the 20th century. The doorway, positioned off-centre to the right, has a plain flat-headed wooden frame and a plank door with wrought-iron strap hinges featuring fleurs-de-lys terminals. The left-hand gable displays a rendered brick chimney stack and a 19th-century wood casement window to the right in the second storey. Internally, the ground floor of Manor Cottage contains a through passage and a large room to the left, with a smaller room to the right (possibly part of the former hall). A ceiling beam in the left-hand room has a chamfered edge with run-out stops and a bar on one side. The through passage has a plank partition on the right, including a plank door with long wrought iron strap hinges. The right-hand room has possible remains of a stack in the rear wall. The roof trusses, probably renewed in the 18th or early 19th century, have notched apexes without ridge pieces, threaded purlins, and collars pegged to the faces of the principal rafters. Early fireplaces may be hidden under plaster. Orchard Cottage has a 20th-century lean-to porch on the right-hand doorway, with a flat hood-mould projecting on either side. It features one window to the left on the ground floor and another in the centre of the second floor, both with 20th-century wood casements. A projecting stone chimney stack with set-offs and a tapered cap, defined by a projecting slate course beneath, is located in the right-hand gable. The interior of Orchard Cottage was not inspected.
