Description

Chaplins and The Laurels are a pair of cottages located in East Ogwell Village. Chaplins, which is on the left, dates from the late 16th century or 17th century and features a porch that may have been added later, dated 1718. The Laurels is believed to be of a later date than Chaplins. The two cottages are separated by a thick wall on the ground floor, which contains what appears to be a blocked window belonging to Chaplins. Both cottages have rear additions and are constructed of rendered stone or cob, with a corrugated-iron roof that is thought to cover thatch.

The buildings are two storeys high. Chaplins has a roughly central doorway framed in chamfered wood with a square head, leading to a plank door. It features a gabled porch with rendered solid walls and a slate roof, and a slit window in the left-hand wall. The wood lintel at the front has a segmental arch and rests on ashlar blocks, one inscribed with "R W" and the other with "1718." There is one window on either side of the porch on the ground floor, another above it, and a fourth to the right on the second storey; all are 19th or early 20th century wood casements. A projecting brick stack is located in the left-hand gable, with another stack featuring a brick shaft in the rear wall to the right. The interior includes a through passage with plank walls, and the ground-floor room to the right has a chamfered ceiling beam with step-stops. The rest of the interior has not been inspected.

The Laurels has a doorway with a 20th-century door to the left and one 19th or early 20th century wood casement window in each storey to the right. The right-hand gable has a stone stack topped with a brick shaft. The interior of The Laurels has not been inspected. Both cottages may contain interesting features hidden beneath plaster.
