Description

Chercombe Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the River Lemon into Highweek Parish. It was built in 1825 or shortly thereafter, as indicated by tenders for rebuilding published in the Exeter Flying Post on June 16, 1825. The bridge features rough limestone ashlar parapets, granite piers, and wrought-iron rails, showcasing a simple yet unaltered design made from large ashlar blocks. It has a single segmental arch, with slightly projecting and strongly battered abutments on each side that sweep outward to oblong-section piers topped with low pyramidical caps. Above the arch, there is a raised bandcourse and a parapet with projecting coping. Extending approximately 5 meters along the riverbank at all four corners are granite piers between two horizontal square-section rails.
