Description

Burnt Cottage is a Grade II listed building that was formerly used as a farm labourer's cottage for Place Barton. It dates from the early 19th century and has a late 20th-century rear addition. The cottage is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob and features a thatched roof, which is half-hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end, with end stacks, the left end stack projecting.

The plan of the cottage is single depth, with two principal rooms located on either side of an entrance. A straight stair rises immediately in front of the door, with a cross passage to the left of the stair. A single-storey outshut with a corrugated iron roof has been added to the rear in the late 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical three-window front with regular fenestration. To the right of the centre, there is a gabled thatched porch with timber lattice sides. The windows are two-light late 19th or 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars, except for a small rectangular window that lights the passage to the left of the porch.

Inside, the cottage features 19th-century joinery throughout. The left end fireplace is open and has a plain timber lintel, while the right-hand room contains an early 20th-century chimneypiece. Burnt Cottage is an attractive roadside cottage situated on the road between Lower and Higher Ashton.
