Description

Quarry Cottage is a house located on Coombe Vale Road in Teignmouth. Originally built in the 18th century, it was altered in the late 19th century. The building is roughcast, likely over red sandstone rubble, and features a hipped thatched roof with a slight eyebrow over the windows, along with half-external rendered end stacks. It was formerly two single-unit cottages but has been modified into a two-unit layout with a 20th-century single-storey rear extension.

The exterior includes 20th-century casement windows on the first floor and 19th-century windows on the ground floor, which flank a 20th-century stable door with a narrow hood on brackets above a 2-light window. The ground-floor windows each have three panes.

Inside, both ground-floor rooms have a semi-elliptical recess beside the central hall, which likely served as the former entrances to each cottage. The central hall and staircase date from the late 19th century. The room on the right features a timber lintel over an open fire with a red sandstone rubble fireback. A ridge in the wall about 2 meters from the floor suggests that the ceiling has been raised, and there is a recess where a window was located before the rear extension was added. The left room also has an open fire with late 19th-century bull-nosed brick jambs supporting a timber lintel. Exposed ceiling rafters show alterations at the rear recess of the chimney-breast, indicating the former position of the staircase for that cottage. The interior includes late 19th-century four-panel doors, and the five-bay roof has exposed main rafters.
