Description

Higher Coombe Farm Cottage is a house dating back to the 16th century, originally situated in the parish of Teignmouth. It was formerly known as Nos. 1 and 2 Higher Coombe Cottages. The building is constructed of painted render over a cob and rubble stone base, featuring a hipped thatched roof with rendered stacks on the end walls, and a ridge stack to the right of the front door. The original layout was a three-room plan, incorporating a hall stack that backed onto a through passage, and a long lower end.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a four-window front. Modern windows, a door, and a porch have replaced original features. A window formerly served as a doorway on the right-hand side.

Inside, the ground-floor room to the left contains a rough crossbeam, seemingly chamfered to its left side. At the rear of the passage, which is characterised by stop-chamfered joists, is a fragment of a plank-and-muntin partition wall along with a doorcase. The room to the right of the passage contains exposed joists with roll-edge moulding and is separated from a room on the far right by a complete plank-and-muntin wall. The upper floors have not been inspected.
